Sitting For The Highway Code Test

You have to be 17 before you can learn how to drive. That’s what most people think. In fact at 16, you can actually attend the K.P.P. 5 Hour Course (Kursus Pendidikan Pemandu).

Besides, you can even sit for the above mentioned Computer Test. The only drawback is, you and your Result slip will have to wait for a year before your 17th birthday arrives before it can be used.

No, you cannot attend the 6 Hours Theory Course to get your JPJL2B certificate. Once again remember, only upon reaching your 17th birthday can you proceed with steps to get your driving license.

Computer tests are conducted nowadays by private owned computer concerns. There are anything 3 to 5 such centres all over town. There are also one or two Institutes that conduct its own “Highway Code” test in their own premises too.

Once your attendance is keyed into the Institute’s computer system, you can them register for your test. Barring you are not blacklisted by the authorities – Police, J.P.J. and Courts, your registration to test should face no problem at all.

Who registers you for the test?

You driving school agent of course. Or maybe it’s your Institutes.

Privately owned computer test centers open Mondays to Sundays, approximately 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. So, go ahead, choose your day and time. My suggestion is: choose Weekdays. Less people.

Registering students for test can be done via the Institute’s office itself or the driving school instructor going to the Computer Test centre himself.

At the computer test centre, sign an attendance list. Put your Mykad into the tray marked “Kali Pertama” or “Ulangan”, which ever may be the case.

If it’s the 1st time you are appearing for the test, you have them to take a “Computer Photo” costing RM10. If you have already taken one somewhere else, you need not therefore take another.

Approximately 8 to 10 candidates are called into the computer room at one go. The computer test is conducted in English or B.Malaysia. You determine your choice. Any problems, don’t be shy, put up your hand to ask the Supervisor for help.

Part one of your test actually is the “Eye Test” or Colour Blind Test. Eight questions are given. I understand you have to secure a 8/8 to be considered “passed”.

If for some reason or other, you fail this part, you cannot proceed to the computer test (50 questions).

A letter will then be given to you requesting you to go to the J.P.J. office nearest to meet some officials there. You will be directed to undergo an eye test at a nearby government clinic.

Assuming one has no problem whatsoever with the “colour blind test”, you then proceed to the “computer test” section.

Approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour is alloted for this section. Judging by the look of things, one has to be rather competent in handling the computer.

So do brush your prowess in this field prior to appearing for your test day.

To remind you, in cases you have forgotten, the test itself is divided into:

1) Section A – 15 questions (Highway Code).

2) Section B – Panduan Berhemat (25 questions).

3) Section C – 10 questions (Demerit Point System, A.P.J 1987, Licenses).

The passing mark, one again is 42 / 50.

The results are announced immediately the moment you come out from the Computer Room. The clerk outside will be the bearer of either Good News or otherwise.

If you are not successful, you could apply to resit again. Of course, you will have make a payment. Arrangements will have to be made between the Computer Centre and your Driving School.

Failing which , I’m afraid your attempt to resit that very day, may not be successful.

Anyway, keep in mind that if on any particular day there are lots of candidates (especially during school holidays) then your request to resit may not be entertained. Unless of course, the centre is willing to conduct your test beyond 8:00 p.m.

Results slips of your computer test is valid for 1 years. Keep it securely. If you have not reach 17 yet, well, you know what to do.

If you do take out your L.D.L. (Learners’ Driving License), then the “Highway Code” is valid for 2 years. Complete your Practical Test doing the Part 1 (Slope), Part 2 (Side Parking, 3 Point Turn) and Part 3 (Road Test) as soon as possible.

Best of luck to you in all your endeavour. In case you have failed to comprehend completely what has been explained this far, do seek the help of your instructor or Institute nearby.
