11 Tips To Pass The J.P.J. Practical Test

To pass the Class D (Cars) road test, a candidate should get a maximum mark of 16/20.

This article will attempt to assist you pass the above test by pin-pointing some of the things you should avoid doing while undergoing the practical test.

1) Compulsory to wear seat belt.

A candidate forgetting to wear the seat belt receives a 5 marks deduction.

As 16 is the minimum marks for passing, this means instant failure for you.

2) Traffic lights near schools.

A traffic light can turn Red as you approach schools.

Irregardless whether there are students or not attempting to cross it, you have to stop.

Ignoring it means you Fail.

3) Stopping correctly at T-Junctions.

Ideally stop 2 metres from the stop line.

This allows you to see clearly both sides of the road.

You have to pull up your handbrakes.

Indicate which direction you intend to go.

Ensure that both sides do not have cars or vehicles coming, before you proceed out from the junction.

Traffic approaching while you’re attempting to cross the road means an instant failure.

4) Overtaking at double or single lines.

Overtaking at such places is much dislike by testers during tests.

Therefore, avoid overtaking at such places.

5) Driving with one hand during tests.

Driving with only one hand is not only dangerous.

It is not encourage at all.

It also denotes poor decorum.

As such, no matter how good you are, and irregardless whether you are better than the tester or otherwise, avoid using a single hand while doing your road test.

6) Giving way to pedestrians or cyclist attempting to cross the road.

Pedestrian and cyclists should always be given the right of way.

Accord them priority, should you wish to pass your practical test.

7) Avoid near misses or accidents.

Try not getting into accidents or even near misses.

People say, a miss is as good as a mile.

But during a practical test, in Malaysia especially, getting involved in a near misses, is as good as failing the entire exam.

8) Poor steering control.

Inability to control the steering well is no way to secure you a driving license.

Prove to the person testing you your confidence and ability to control the steering adeptly.

This would go a long way in helping you in your attempt to get a driving license.

9) Do not overtake vehicles during tests.

Be patient. You should not attempt to overtake other vehicles.

Remember you are on test.

If there are obstacles and other vehicles ahead of you, stop a safe distance behind them.

Overtaking on the left is allowed.

Only when the situation is safe and the traffic ahead is turning right.

Use proper indicators when doing so.

10) Using the indicators and rear / side mirrors.

As a driving instructor, it’s my opinion, a student who is incapable of using indicators, rear and side mirrors well, does not deserve to pass.

So, make sure you can use these items proficiently and adeptly when doing your practical test.

11) Be courteous and well mannered during tests.

I need not tech you the norms of being well mannered.

A “good morning” here and a “thank you” there goes a long way in helping you towards securing a driving license.

Upon reaching or arriving at the institute’s grounds, ask the tester politely, if he wishes to have the car engine switched off.

Follow his instructions.

These are some of the important items I can remember in my attempt to assist you to get a Class D driving license.

Hopefully I succeed in doing so.

The cost to re-do the computer test differ from instructor to instructor.

Sorry, I cannot divulge the amount charge.

How long does it take to get the L license? Can you give me some guide.

    Thanks.

      Dear Gosu,

From time of 5 hour course and undang test, it should probably take 15 days. But it all depends on whether you pass your undang test at first go or otherwise.

After undang test, you’ll gave to attend 6 hour theory course followed by taking out the “L” license.

Ok,so i was wondering what would happen during the road test if i forgot the destinated path? Will i still pass the test or not? thank you so much.

    • Cikgu Yap May 18, 2010 at 11:21 am - Reply

It is best if you don’t forget the prescribed route. As to whether you’ll be assessed upon your driving ability alone, I’m not certain. If I were the tester, I certainly would.

I failed my on the road exam by just a point. My only failure was lack of confidence in the gear. Because of that it’s been killing my confidence in driving. I have a retake soon, if i fail my retake, then my L would expire, that’s alot of pressure. How do I overcome this problem?

Also, i’m not confident on the routes because i’m taking it in an unfamiliar area.

The only alternative is for you to learn more times. The same applies to your unfamiliar knowledge of the test route. Learn more!

I will take the JPJ test road tomorrow…but i`m still not confident whether i`ll pass it or not…it is because my instructor not telling overall what should i do..for example when i reach at the T junction…..whould i do n so on…so…when i drive the car on the road..i feel blur…the instructor also didn`t mentioned to me the basic rules…is it the way of instructor to teach the new students like me?please help me..i`m not so confident to pass to test tomorrow..what should i do???

    • Cikgu Yap June 1, 2010 at 3:46 pm - Reply

In the future, write to this blog earlier. The instructor should explain explicitly what to do at a junction. Amongst things to do briefly at T or cross junction are:
      a) Stop 2 meter before line.
      b) Free gear and pull up handbrake.
      c) Look right, look left and then right again before coming out.
      d) Should traffic come from either side, do not move out. Put on your signals before moving out.

In the future, do write to me a little sooner. Overall, I see your training given by your instructor appears weak.

It doesn’t matter which method you adopt. Important thing is you can handle the car well.

    • Cikgu Yap January 25, 2011 at 1:18 pm - Reply

In practical test, students must show they can drive up to gear 4. You seem a bit weak in driving. Seek your instructor’s help.

    Hi,

I’m learning driving soon and I agreed with what you said about driving the car with two hands. This question may sound shallow but how are you going to change the gear when you keep driving with two hands just because driving with one hand will fail you in the test?

    Francis

    • Cikgu Yap March 8, 2011 at 3:21 pm - Reply

At point of changing gears, hold the steering steadily with your right hand. Then quickly change gears with your left hand. Try keeping the steering steady in the process.

Can I know why do you need to pull up the handbrake when you’re stopping at the T-junction? Can I just step on the brake pedal without pulling the handbrake?

    • Cikgu Yap March 24, 2011 at 9:26 am - Reply

At times, T-junctions are uneven. It might slope backwards. Drivers are advised to pull up hand brakes at junctions. Engaging handbrakes prevents the car moving forward if you are hit violently from the back!

In the above situation, your car will not lunge forward to hit the car in front of you. If you should hit the car in front, you’ll be at fault.

    dear mr.yap,
i wil go for my pra test nxt week.

    im confuse on a thing,

when we are in gear 1 and going to move our car, do v have to let go the clutch slowly up then followed by pressing the oil ? or do v hv to press the oil first then followed by lettting go the clutch slowly up bit by bit so that the car can go.

i ask this cos different instructor giving me different instructions. so which is the best way and what is the pro n contra using either way.

if i press oil 1st then let go clutch slowly , normally the car will jugged. n if i let go clutch first then press oil normally the car might “mati engin”,

    pls comment sir,

    thnk u

    • Cikgu Yap May 13, 2011 at 9:04 pm - Reply

My opinion is, step on the accelerator slightly first. The car being heavy needs the proper power to enable it to move. This will prevent it from stalling easily.

You have a 2nd chance. Tell the tester in charge you’d like to do the 2nd attempt and reverse down the slope.

If you are well prepared, drive steadily and follow your instructions well and commit no “G.S.M” (gagal Serta Merta) errors, it would be extremely difficult to FAIL you. Further, avoid making more than 5 mistakes during the road test, you can pass! As an instructor of many years experience, you will deserve to “pass” only if you can drive well.
