What It Takes to Become an Institute’s Driving Instructor

This short article is categorically intended to answer a reader’s request. He asked me to lay out what it takes to become a driving institute’s instructor.

First and foremost, if you wish to be a driving institute’s instructor, do not be “fickle-minded”. What you may ask, has this to do with being an instructor?

You see, unlike other jobs, to be a driving instructor, one has to undergo courses to secure the certificate to teach; the S.M.2 or Sijil Mengajar 2.

This certificate costs quite a large sum. Besides, the time spent in attending the training required is rather long and strenuous. Therefore, should you suddenly choose to quit, it would then be a waste of time and effort.

What, may one ask, are the requirements?

Amongst some of the basic requirements are:

i) Possess qualities such as patience, hardworking and trustworthy.

ii) Possess the SPM at least. The Sijil Vokasional is also acceptable.

iii) Possess licenses classes B2 (motor) and D (cars). You should also possess 5 years experience.

iv) Should be Malaysian citizens.

v) Those wishing to be instructors, should first be sponsored either by a driving school or institute.

vi) Should attend a training course conducted by state JPJ including Sabah and Sarawak.

vii) The above training lasts approximately a week. The course costs anything from RM1000 – RM1500.

viii) During the duration of the course, candidates are provided training on how to assess a student for B2 (motor), D (cars) and E (lorry) and other classes.

ix) Teory tests are also conducted on the teaching and testing of the vehicles.

A student who is successful would be awarded the S.M.2 or Sijil Mengajar 2.

An instructor’s S.M.2 has to be renewed yearly. Renewal has to be done at least 1 month before the date of expiry.

To renew also, one needs the recommendation of the Institute’s Manager.

Successfully obtaining the certificate to teach permits one to apply to be an instructor. Maybe initially you would be commissioned on a temporary basis. When you have become more experienced, maybe then you’ll be accepted on a permanent basis.

For those wishing to become a driving instructor, Hopefully this short article would be able to answer some of your queries.
