J.P.J. Practical Theory Course Conducted In Driving Institutes

What Can One Expect From The Practical 3 Hours Theory Course Conducted By Driving Institutes?

For the Learner’s Driving License (L.D.L) or “L” license to be issued, requires the certificate JPJ L2B.

A potential student taking up a driving course for Classes D (cars) and B2 (motorcycles below 250 cc) will have to undergo this compulsory 6 hour theory course.

Part I of the above is theory in the class. Part II is a 3 hour practical lessons conducted by an instructor. This is done in the perimeters of the driving institutes itself.

What can a student undergoing a 3 hour practical lessons from a driving instructor expect to be taught?

Normally, an instructor undertaking this lesson is expected to do a few things such as:

1) The car tyres

Inform new or inexperienced students about tyres. Tyres normally have problems pertaining to balancing, pressure and alignment. A good instructor should able to explain to his pupils regarding the 3 items above.

2) Tyre changing

Explaining to the new candidate the correct method of changing tyre. For this, explain the tools required for this rather difficult project. A car should ideally have a spare tyre, jack, spanner and screwdriver.

An instructor should demonstrate to the students how to change tyre. The points at which the jack is to be placed should be shown explicitly to prevent unforeseen mishap from happening.

3) Explaining the important items in the engine compartment

Among the important items that should be pointed out in the engine compartment are:

a) Brake fluid – The brake fluid used in Malaysia is DOT 3. The fluid can be of varies colours, crimson or red, blue or green. All can be intermixed. Note that DOT 4 used for foreign countries is not to be used ideally. The instructor will demonstrate to the pupils the brake reservoir and show them the upper and lower levels where the brake fluid should ideally be.

b) Battery – Let students know, a car battery is of the 12 volt capacity. Modern batteries are water free. No maintenance is required. If water or maintenance is needed, use either sulfuric acid or battery water which is distilled water. Incidentally, rain water can also be used. A battery with proper maintenance can last 15 – 18 months.

c) Engine oil – Engine oil and oil filter are usually renewed at 10,000km intervals. Seek the assistance of a good mechanic if you do not know how to change this oil.

There are many types of engine oil available in the market. They are all nearly the same. Only the prices may differ.

When changing the engine oil, remember also to change the oil filter too. Motorist should also check the oil levels of the engine oil periodically. If found to be short, a driver should add in some spare engine oil. Proper maintenance of the engine oil will ensure the engine will be in tip top condition.

d) The air filter – Inside the engine will be found an air filter. This is an important time. An air filter ensures the smooth running of a carburetor unit.

With a good air filter, a car engine or timing will idle perfectly. Students therefore should be advised to look after this item well.

Use original spare parts wherever possible. Furthermore, students should learn how to replace an air filter themselves.

e) The fuel filter – Most drivers tend to forget this important item. Fuel filters are normally placed in the engine compartment. Sometimes in certain models of cars, they can be found underneath the vehicle itself.

Those who are ignorant of where this item is located should seek the help of a good mechanic. Changing your air filter at recommended intervals will ensure that your car runs well and smooth.

f) The spark plugs – Spark plugs are also another item which the instructor should advice his pupils changing in their vehicles from time to time.

Change all four plugs at one go. Do not change them individually. Plugs can vary from RM18 – RM20.

Plugs changing can be quite a problematic job. Seek a mechanic’s assistance wherever possible. A good set of plugs ensure the smooth running of an engine, thus giving the car good consumption and smooth free running besides providing the car with power too.

g) The radiator – One other very important item in the engine, of which a potential student should be taught is the radiator itself. Drivers of vehicles should ensure it is filled with water always. Fill in water should the radiator needs it.

Nevertheless, students should be advised never to open the radiator if it is boiling and lack water. There is also an auxiliary plastic container next to the radiator. This container should also contain water, as insufficient water in the plastic container to be drained or drawn into the radiator itself. The radiator cap should be kept air tight to ensure its good working condition. This will eventually cause the radiator to function well and keep the car temperature low.

These are some of the things which a student undergoing a 6 hour theory should ideally be taught by an instructor doing the above course.

Hopefully, in learning a few important items in the engine itself will assist a student to become well versed with the maintenance of a car engine.

If both you and your mom can afford it, why not? Either find an instructor or go to the nearest institute.

You should be fluent in English to do the Highway Code test in English.
