Assuming as a candidate who is attempting to secure a Class D (Car) license and you have just successfully managed to get across the “slope” and down it, you will now arrive at a stop, look go sign (Berhenti).

Stop and your eyes should now either look towards the Left or the Right where the Side Parking lots are.

You make the decision as to which slot you are about to do your side parking test in.

During your practice run or training you had prior to this practical test (Ujian J.P.J.), you would have known which is your favorite parking slot.

At times, the J.P.J. official will direct you to the parking lots they would like you to go to.

In such cases, you will have no alternative but to follow their instructions. In most cases, it is the candidates themselves that make the choice.

In this article, I shall not be able to use any graphic or diagram to aid in my explanation on how to do a “side parking”.

As such I shall do my utmost best to describe / explain how the side parking is done.

Hopefully candidates reading this article would be able to overcome the problem facing them.

Coming into the parking slot you have chosen, the parking slot / lot will be on the left side of your car.

Remember, to always place your car approximately 1 – 1 1/2 feet from the parking posts.

Your car should ideally be parallel to the parking area.

Ensure your entire car crosses the first three parking poles.

Secondly, reverse slowly, looking left until you see the first post appear in the small triangular mirror. Then stop.

Thirdly, turn your steering to the left completely. Ideally you should jam it.

For the forth step, place your neck outside the window, look backwards towards the 7 – 8 sticks behind.

Look for the 5th, 6th or 7th stick. When your car body is parallel to any one of the above sticks, Stop.

Turn your steering now towards the Right. Straighten your front tyres. You can put your head out to do this.

With the front tyres now in a straight position, place your head out to look at the back tyre.

Ensure the back tyre sits on the white / yellow line of the parking lot.

Your car is now ready to enter the parking lot. Then, turn your steering to the right completely, reverse the car about 80% into the lot.

Finally, engage gear one, move forward in front.

When the car is well parked in the lot, put up your Right hand to indicate to the tester your completion of the test.

Remember though as long as the car is parked within the parking area and you have not touched any of the parking sticks, you have Passed.

However, your front or rear tyres should not touch the lines either.

Remember also, it is not necessary your car has to be parked straight in the parking lot.

You are given 5 minutes to complete the side parking maneuver.

If the car engine dies (even a few times), no action is taken.

The important thing to remember is, just complete your “side parking” within a span of 5 minutes.

You will then pass your side parking test.

As coming out of the side parking lot should not be a problem, you will then proceed to the last of your Part II test, which is the “3 Point Turn” aspect of the test.

Passing this part of the test, will earn you the complete Part II of the test.

Best of luck to you in the Part II (Slope, Side Parking and 3 Point Turn) aspect of the test.

If you have any problem regarding my explanation, do refer to your own instructor for assistance. Anyway, his side parking method might differ from mine slightly.

but i looked at the paper and it wrote “lulus”..
but the uncle who taught me said i failed…

        so i failed or pass???

when i take another test, the uncle will get dividen???

The tester might not have seen you knocking the pole. Look at the result slip carefully.

I am unable to say whether you passed or failed. In my opinion, hitting the pole as you come out will cause you to fail!

            HAHA…

    • Cikgu Yap February 4, 2010 at 8:03 pm - Reply

      Dear Weiling,

After you see the 5th tiang, stop and turn steering to the right. You have now straightened the tyres.

Put your neck out of the window to see the back tyres touch the white line of parking lot. You are now ready to enter your parking lot.

Please read the rest of the instructions on the Side Parking article posted on May 23rd 2009.

Can u also give us advice on how to remove the car from the parking spot after side parking

    • Cikgu Yap June 29, 2010 at 12:05 am - Reply

I assume you are referring to side parking in public places. Before reversing, take a walk around the parking lot. Know how much space you have in front and at the back. 1st, move forward to the car in front as near as possible. Reverse backwards, pulling your steering all to the left. Reverse backwards to the car behind to as near as possible. Then turn your steering all to the right. You should be able to come out of the side parking fairly easy.

During my test, after I crossed the slope I went to the parking area without stopping. Someone shouted in Malay. I could not understand, then he said to collect my documents from the office near the slope. I collected it and then returned to my car. Then, after I parked, raised my hand, however the official was telling me something that I could not understand or hear sitting inside the car. I just picked up one word “tire”. Then straightened the tire. When I went to the officer at the parking area, he said me I failed as I took 20 seconds more! My questions are:
    1. Should I stop after climbing up and down successfully the slop to collect my documents?
    2. How could I apply against such rude behaviors? I don’t understand Malay as I am here in Malaysia only for 2 months. Such worse behavior is really objectionable.

I already passed by road test.

I am an Assistant Professor with Ph.D., recently moved to Malaysia from other country. I didn’t bring any driving license, hence, I am facing trouble and had to go for these tests, which are absolutely ridiculous and has little connection with driving. These seem more like psychological test or playing with kids.

A time limit is given. Exceeding the limit will cause you to fail.

Is it true that side parking and 3 point only uses clutch? or need to use the oil pedal too?

    • Cikgu Yap March 3, 2011 at 3:50 pm - Reply

In my opinion, your instructor has taught you the 3 point turn incorrectly.

    Hi Mr. Yap,

    I have an “L” license but i don’t have a car.

    1. Can i stick my “L” sticker on my brother’s car which i’m going to drive?
    2. If i am to drive my brother’s car with the “L” license on the road, will i have problem if i get stopped by the traffic police and ask to show my license?

    Thank you.

    • Cikgu Yap March 3, 2011 at 3:48 pm - Reply

You can’t stick an L sticker on your brother’s car. You can only learn driving via a driving school’s vehicle.

It’s wrong! You can only learn driving through a driving school or institute.

    Hi,

Thanks for this post. For the parking,I failed because my bumper was very slightly over the lines (even though the wheels were clearly inside). I had never been told about the bumpers in the lessons or in the practice test, but….

Do you know if the side mirrors must also be inside the lines? I asked but was unable to get a clear answer. I have my re-take next week.
