I should have in fact conveyed my applause to you for making a decision to secure a driving license. It’s as they say, “better later than never”. To potential drivers, a hearing impairment is a minor matter. As such, I wish to encourage you to continue with your determination of finally getting a driving license.

In case you might have misconstrued my earlier advice, permit me to reiterate, a medical certificate is not a requirement. Only good medical advice is suggested. But of course, a good hearing aid too.

Cikgu Yap,

Thank you for your concern and advice, most appreciated. :) I am well aware of the limitations imposed on people with hearing impairment and the dangers involved but life itself is always full of dangers and limits no matter where one goes. Its only how we take general care.

A few years ago, I thought of doing my driving license but did not get around to it because I have been busy with my commitments. Now it is a good opportunity for me to take up driving license but I am lost because other than requiring a medical certified letter from the hospital, what else am I supposed to proceed from after obtaining a medical certified letter?

Unfortunately, JPJ website cannot possibly provide you with all the info you need. Although no medical certificate is required for potential students to take up driving course, nevertheless, a student should realise that hearing well is of utmost important.

Can you imagine not being able to hear other drivers horning at you? Or for that matter not being able to hear trailers or other vehicles approaching you from behind. It’s actually very dangerous!

So, if you are hearing impaired, see a specialist. Getting a good and effective hearing aids is my suggestion. The onus is on you to do what’s necessary for your own safety.

I did not find any detailed information on the JPJ website for hearing impaired people on the steps for driving license/test?

Are the steps for taking the driving licens/test the same as that for non-disabled people?

If not, please advise what else must hearing impaired people need to do besides getting a medical certified letter prior to taking driving course?

I would appreciate your kind response.

Thanks.
