To pass the Class D (Cars) road test, a candidate should get a maximum mark of 16/20.
This article will attempt to assist you pass the above test by pin-pointing some of the things you should avoid doing while undergoing the practical test.
1) Compulsory to wear seat belt.
A candidate forgetting to wear the seat belt receives a 5 marks deduction.
As 16 is the minimum marks for passing, this means instant failure for you.
2) Traffic lights near schools.
A traffic light can turn Red as you approach schools.
Irregardless whether there are students or not attempting to cross it, you have to stop.
Ignoring it means you Fail.
3) Stopping correctly at T-Junctions.
Ideally stop 2 metres from the stop line.
This allows you to see clearly both sides of the road.
You have to pull up your handbrakes.
Indicate which direction you intend to go.
Ensure that both sides do not have cars or vehicles coming, before you proceed out from the junction.
Traffic approaching while you’re attempting to cross the road means an instant failure.
4) Overtaking at double or single lines.
Overtaking at such places is much dislike by testers during tests.
Therefore, avoid overtaking at such places.
5) Driving with one hand during tests.
Driving with only one hand is not only dangerous.
It is not encourage at all.
It also denotes poor decorum.
As such, no matter how good you are, and irregardless whether you are better than the tester or otherwise, avoid using a single hand while doing your road test.
6) Giving way to pedestrians or cyclist attempting to cross the road.
Pedestrian and cyclists should always be given the right of way.
Accord them priority, should you wish to pass your practical test.
7) Avoid near misses or accidents.
Try not getting into accidents or even near misses.
People say, a miss is as good as a mile.
But during a practical test, in Malaysia especially, getting involved in a near misses, is as good as failing the entire exam.
8) Poor steering control.
Inability to control the steering well is no way to secure you a driving license.
Prove to the person testing you your confidence and ability to control the steering adeptly.
This would go a long way in helping you in your attempt to get a driving license.
9) Do not overtake vehicles during tests.
Be patient. You should not attempt to overtake other vehicles.
Remember you are on test.
If there are obstacles and other vehicles ahead of you, stop a safe distance behind them.
Overtaking on the left is allowed.
Only when the situation is safe and the traffic ahead is turning right.
Use proper indicators when doing so.
10) Using the indicators and rear / side mirrors.
As a driving instructor, it’s my opinion, a student who is incapable of using indicators, rear and side mirrors well, does not deserve to pass.
So, make sure you can use these items proficiently and adeptly when doing your practical test.
11) Be courteous and well mannered during tests.
I need not tech you the norms of being well mannered.
A “good morning” here and a “thank you” there goes a long way in helping you towards securing a driving license.
Upon reaching or arriving at the institute’s grounds, ask the tester politely, if he wishes to have the car engine switched off.
Follow his instructions.
These are some of the important items I can remember in my attempt to assist you to get a Class D driving license.
Hopefully I succeed in doing so.
If fail to pass, how much is the cost for redo exam??
Thanks.
Dear Joseph,
The cost to re-do the computer test differ from instructor to instructor.
Sorry, I cannot divulge the amount charge.

How long does it take to get the L license? Can you give me some guide.
Thanks.
Dear Gosu,
From time of 5 hour course and undang test, it should probably take 15 days. But it all depends on whether you pass your undang test at first go or otherwise.
After undang test, you’ll gave to attend 6 hour theory course followed by taking out the “L” license.
Sir, I’ve successfully passed my JPJ test. Thanks to your wonderful articles.
They really prepare me on what to be expected on the test day.=)
My test was on last Thursday. I will get my license this Tuesday.
Will continue using a manual transmission car, I love it!
Don’t wanna waste what I’ve been taught at driving school.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Cikgu Yap.. my bday is at oct 11..do u tink i can get my driving licence im going 17 in this year..do u tink that i can get my license or its gona change to age 21?
The answer to your question, only time can tell.
Cikgu yap,i need you to answer my question please.
Ok,so i was wondering what would happen during the road test if i forgot the destinated path? Will i still pass the test or not? thank you so much.
It is best if you don’t forget the prescribed route. As to whether you’ll be assessed upon your driving ability alone, I’m not certain. If I were the tester, I certainly would.
I failed my on the road exam by just a point. My only failure was lack of confidence in the gear. Because of that it’s been killing my confidence in driving. I have a retake soon, if i fail my retake, then my L would expire, that’s alot of pressure. How do I overcome this problem?
Also, i’m not confident on the routes because i’m taking it in an unfamiliar area.
The only alternative is for you to learn more times. The same applies to your unfamiliar knowledge of the test route. Learn more!
cikgu yap,
may i know how long does it take to get the L license until P lisence? Can i obtain my P lisence within a month?thanks…
Approximately 50 days.
Cikgu Yap..
I will take the JPJ test road tomorrow…but i`m still not confident whether i`ll pass it or not…it is because my instructor not telling overall what should i do..for example when i reach at the T junction…..whould i do n so on…so…when i drive the car on the road..i feel blur…the instructor also didn`t mentioned to me the basic rules…is it the way of instructor to teach the new students like me?please help me..i`m not so confident to pass to test tomorrow..what should i do???
In the future, write to this blog earlier. The instructor should explain explicitly what to do at a junction. Amongst things to do briefly at T or cross junction are:
a) Stop 2 meter before line.
b) Free gear and pull up handbrake.
c) Look right, look left and then right again before coming out.
d) Should traffic come from either side, do not move out. Put on your signals before moving out.
In the future, do write to me a little sooner. Overall, I see your training given by your instructor appears weak.
Hi, i want to get car driving license in Malaysia so what do i need documents to learn . After learning , what type of license will get it. ?please reply me.
I need some tips how to pass the parking and 3 penjuru coz next week I will take the JPJ test for my 2nd time
Please read the following article ==> The 3 Point Turn In Class D Practical Test
Hello, may i know which way must I apply when turning the steering wheel during JPJ test? push and pull or hand over hand method??Actually I am more adapted with the hand over hand method.
It doesn’t matter which method you adopt. Important thing is you can handle the car well.
Why is it that the people I know who have failed their computer undang test share a common mark of 41. Is this purely coincidental?
sir,i will take road test next week.but im so confius bout the gear usage on the road.my trainer told me where to use first gear and so on.At the busy road,we have to change down to 3rd or 2nd gear.but during QTI test, the tester told me to change gear from 3rd to 4th.and he told me that im not so good in gear usage.my trainer said that, but he said this.i dont know what will be the jpj said next week.so confius bout gear.how to know the best gear to use at certain roads, sir ?
In practical test, students must show they can drive up to gear 4. You seem a bit weak in driving. Seek your instructor’s help.
Hi,
I’m learning driving soon and I agreed with what you said about driving the car with two hands. This question may sound shallow but how are you going to change the gear when you keep driving with two hands just because driving with one hand will fail you in the test?
Francis
At point of changing gears, hold the steering steadily with your right hand. Then quickly change gears with your left hand. Try keeping the steering steady in the process.
Can I know why do you need to pull up the handbrake when you’re stopping at the T-junction? Can I just step on the brake pedal without pulling the handbrake?
At times, T-junctions are uneven. It might slope backwards. Drivers are advised to pull up hand brakes at junctions. Engaging handbrakes prevents the car moving forward if you are hit violently from the back!
In the above situation, your car will not lunge forward to hit the car in front of you. If you should hit the car in front, you’ll be at fault.
hello sir,I was having my road test today..but unfortunately I failed..actually i failed due to 3 point turn..bcoz when I was asked to do so..I looked over the shoulder and i saw a car very far from me and that was standing there but headlights were on and I thought It will take some time so i started doing my 3 point turn..and meanwhile that car came behind me and she have to wait for me to complete my 3 point turn…and then after coming back examiner said that i need to wait for dat lady for right of a way…but i looked over the shoulder and dat car was not moving so i started doing my 3 point turn…and overalltotal points i got was 45…wat does dis mean..like…what marks should i get to pass the road test???The xaminer gave me :fails to adequately observe/use caution 10,poor judgement in traffic 10,fails to yield right of way 15,fails to anticipate actions of 10..total 45points…!!wat does dis mean…please explain me sir…my next road test is in May…!!thanks.
dear mr.yap,
i wil go for my pra test nxt week.
im confuse on a thing,
when we are in gear 1 and going to move our car, do v have to let go the clutch slowly up then followed by pressing the oil ? or do v hv to press the oil first then followed by lettting go the clutch slowly up bit by bit so that the car can go.
i ask this cos different instructor giving me different instructions. so which is the best way and what is the pro n contra using either way.
if i press oil 1st then let go clutch slowly , normally the car will jugged. n if i let go clutch first then press oil normally the car might “mati engin”,
pls comment sir,
thnk u
My opinion is, step on the accelerator slightly first. The car being heavy needs the proper power to enable it to move. This will prevent it from stalling easily.
Hi Cikgu Yap, i’m having my driving test next monday. I would like to ask if i am doing “mendaki bukit”, my car doesnt reach the yellow line, can i request for the second trial? :)
You have a 2nd chance. Tell the tester in charge you’d like to do the 2nd attempt and reverse down the slope.
Do you have something similar to Jom Belajar Memandu written in English ? I am an expat in Malaysia and wanted to get a license. I do not understand Bahasa Malay.
Thanks
The English version book is call “Driving Made Easy”. It is available in MPH Bookstores.
Hello Sir, I’m having my test next week. I would like to ask that is it possible to ask instructions from the tester during the road test? because it seems that I am not familiar with the routes..
No harm requesting the tester to help you. But, shouldn’t you be better prepared.
hi cikgu,
nak tanya. kalau saya nak buat jpj test di tempat lain ,bukan di tempat yang saya daftar ..boleh kew?
sebab m studying at alor setar.. travelling just for this cost me much to perform at kl… what if i did it there
Saudara Puven, You can make the change of venue.
Hi mr yap, I would like to know if I need to identify the parts of the vehicles to the examiner? And my instructor thought me 2 routes, a long and short version of each route. Which one should I use? Thanks.
Yes, you do. Tester will normally tell you which route to take.
Hi Mr Yap, may I ask if I were to switch on my engine, do I need to press the clutch and break ? Or is it only the clutch ? Thank you.
Hi cikgu yap…macamana nak relax and stay cool bila jpj ada kat sebelah? Because i always end up panic and ruined everthing :(
Hi Mr.yap, im omar from oug. I have car driving liciense.almost for 20 years now. Thinking to ride small bike so for L liciense do i need to go for another class or just go to jpj and apply for L liciense. If not mistaken last time past 20 years ago i understand no need to go for class. Any latest info hope to share.. tq
Go through process attending course for highway and then 15-18 hour practical lessons.
what to do if the jpj officer will only pass you if you pay bribe? I’m talking about this place called “perfect driving academy”
If you are well prepared, drive steadily and follow your instructions well and commit no “G.S.M” (gagal Serta Merta) errors, it would be extremely difficult to FAIL you. Further, avoid making more than 5 mistakes during the road test, you can pass! As an instructor of many years experience, you will deserve to “pass” only if you can drive well.
